HDPE pipe

Water and drainage components Reviewed 24 Oct 2026

What it is

An HDPE pipe is a flexible plastic pipe made of high-density polyethylene that is joined by heat fusion into continuous, leak-free lines.

Where it is used

Water distribution mains and house connections, rural water schemes, gas lines, sewer rehabilitation, trenchless crossings by horizontal directional drilling, and sea outfalls.

How it works

Fused joints are as strong as the pipe itself, so a long string behaves as one continuous line that can be pulled through a drilled hole or floated and sunk offshore. The material does not corrode, resists most chemicals, and bends to follow gentle curves and ground movement. As a flexible pipe, it carries soil load partly by deflecting and mobilising support from the surrounding compacted backfill.

Types

Materials

High-density polyethylene compound with carbon black or UV stabilisers; electrofusion and butt-fusion fittings; compression fittings for small sizes.

Design basics

Pressure rating comes from the material grade and SDR, with derating at higher temperatures and checks for surge. Buried pipes are checked for ring deflection and buckling under soil and traffic loads, which depend on bedding and backfill quality. Thermal expansion is large compared with metal pipes, so anchoring and expansion allowance matter for exposed runs.

Installation and QA steps

  1. Store away from sunlight and sharp objects.
  2. Fuse joints with calibrated machines, clean scraped surfaces and recorded fusion parameters, by trained operators.
  3. Bed the pipe on fine material free of stones.
  4. Backfill and compact the haunches carefully.
  5. Pressure-test sections and disinfect water lines.
Common failures
  • Poor fusion joints from contamination or wrong temperature and time
  • point loading and scratches from stones
  • excessive deflection from poor backfill
  • UV degradation if left exposed for long periods
