Bridge parapet

Bridge components Reviewed 24 Oct 2026

What it is

A bridge parapet is the barrier along the edge of a bridge deck that protects vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians from falling off.

Diagram: Indiacon original, not to scale.

Where it is used

All road and rail bridges, flyovers, footbridges and culvert edges.

How it works

For vehicles, the parapet contains and redirects an errant vehicle, much like a road crash barrier but with the added consequence of a fall. For pedestrians, it provides a safe, climb-resistant edge of adequate height. Its anchorage transfers impact forces into the deck slab or kerb beam.

Types

Materials

Reinforced concrete, galvanised steel, aluminium alloys, anchor bolts and resin anchors.

Design basics

Containment level is chosen from traffic speed, volume and the consequence of a vehicle leaving the bridge, such as a railway or river below. The parapet and the deck cantilever are designed for the code impact load. Height, openings and climbability are checked for pedestrians and cyclists. Continuity with approach barriers avoids exposed ends.

Installation and QA steps

  1. Cast or fix parapets to line and level.
  2. Check anchor bolt embedment and torque.
  3. Provide transitions to approach barriers.
  4. Inspect for damage after impacts and for corrosion.
Common failures
  • Anchorage pull-out under impact
  • corrosion of steel parts and anchor bolts
  • exposed parapet ends without transitions
  • low height on bridges with cyclists
